What is reflexology and how does it work?

by Debbie Kacic, LMT

Reflexology is a form of bodywork that focuses primarily on the hands and feet. While it is not Massage Therapy, it is a unique blend of thumb and finger pressure on reflex areas used to promote the body’s return to a more natural state of balance. It is performed by a practitioner who is trained and educated in the understanding of reflex points. By applying pressure to a specific area, a Reflexologist may be able to affect the gland, organ or body system that is believed to correspond with that particular reflex area.

The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are "reflex" areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. For example:

the toes reflect the head
the heart and chest are around the ball of the foot
the liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arch of the foot
low back and intestines are towards the heel

Practitioners believe that applying pressure to these reflex areas can promote health in the corresponding organs through energetic pathways. A scientific explanation is that the pressure may send signals that balance the nervous system or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce pain and stress.
Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, an ear, nose, and throat doctor, introduced this concept of "zone therapy" in 1915. American physiotherapist Eunice Ingram further developed this zone theory in the 1930's into what is now knows as reflexology.

What will I feel during a treatment?

Most people find reflexology to be very relaxing. A session generally lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. You will remain fully clothed and be asked to remove only your shoes and socks. You will lay comfortably reclined on a massage table. The reflexologist will ask you to fill out a health history and then she will assess your feet. She will stimulates various points on your feet to identify areas of tenderness or tension. It shouldn't be painful, so if you feel discomfort, be sure to tell the reflexologist. She will work within your comfort zone. Some areas may be tender and the reflexologist may spend extra time on these points. The soreness will decrease with pressure. If you're ticklish don’t worry. Reflexology is the application of firm pressure to your feet.

Why should I get a reflexology treatment?

Reflexology is a popular alternative therapy treatment. It promotes relaxation, improves circulation, reduces pain, soothes tired feet, and encourages overall healing and balancing of your entire body. People of all ages can benefit from it. Reflexology can help with:

Stress and stress-related conditions
Tension and sinus headaches
Digestive and breathing disorders
Increase circulation
Hormonal imbalances
Digestive problems, such as constipation

After your treatment you will feel calm and relaxed. You may even feel a bit sleepy.

Some Precautions to consider:

If you're pregnant, talk with your doctor first and let the reflexologist know. Be sure to give the reflexologist a complete and accurate health history. If you have foot ulcers, injury, or blood vessel disease such as blood clots, consult your doctor before having a reflexology treatment.

Reflexology does not diagnose medical conditions, change prescription or take the place of your healthcare provider. It is recommended as a complementary therapy and should not replace medical treatment.
