REIKI: THE SIMPLE HEALING SYSTEM
by Debbie Kacic, LMT, Reiki Master
The hardest thing about Reiki is explaining it. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands". It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is actually two Japanese words, Rei which means "Universal or spirit" and Ki which is "life force ". Life force is the energy that surrounds us and flows through us all, thus Reiki is referred to as Universal Life Force Energy. Many times I’am asked what Reiki is, and after explaining this gentle healing art, I get that look like I’ve just jumped off the pages of a “Harry Potter” book. The looks are totally understood though, because I felt the same way the first time I experienced this gentle energy flow about 12 years ago. I had been diagnosed with a spot on my right breast that would be monitored. I received a Reiki treatment along with a guided visualization of the lump breaking up and disappearing. At my next check up one month later, the spot was gone. This was the start of my journey with Reiki. One year later I took a Reiki class and became attuned to this gentle energy. I have used it on my children and their children, and it works.
Reiki is energy, pure and simple. The energy is Universal Energy, a non-physical, can't see it energy that makes up everything that is alive. Our bodies are not only bones, muscles, nerves, glands and organs, we also consist of an energy system that keeps our bodies functioning smoothly. This energy is active around us and flowing through us, giving us the energy we need to survive, just as the air flows and give us the oxygen we need to breathe in order to live. It’s the same energy that nature uses to make trees grow, the flowers bloom and the sun warm us. This energy is channeled through the hands of a Reiki practioner to the receiver. The Reiki practitioner is able to channel this energy flow because they have been attuned to the flow. This attunement process is what makes Reiki different from any other hands on healing technique available to us. Once you are attuned to Reiki energy you have it for the rest of your life.
Reiki is an uncomplicated system of natural healing that can provide healing on all levels of your existence including body, mind and spirit. It encourages relaxation, and relieves suffering. It is not a religious belief, and you don’t actually have to believe in Reiki at all for it to work. However, Reiki will work much better if you accept the energies and are willing to move from a painful situation to a pain-free situation. While Reiki does not take the place of conventional medicine, it can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment plans to compliment and enhance the healing process. Reiki will create a sense of well being which will increase the rate of recovery.
The truth is, no one really knows how or why Reiki works. It is clear that it does work, but as of right now, modern science has provided no explanation for it. The best way for anyone to understand Reiki is to receive a treatment from a Reiki practioner. We encourage you to try this wonderful healing modality and decide for yourself. We have three Reiki practioners on staff available to share a Reiki treatment with you. Give us a call today to schedule a one hour Reiki session and see for yourself the wonders of Reiki energy. After your treatment, if you are interested in learning more about Reiki and how to incorporate it into your life, we are offering a Reiki I class on December 8, 2007. You can call Nature’s Touch Wellness Center for a flyer and more information on the class, or to schedule a time to experience Reiki for yourself.
